Prior to a storm, make sure your home is in good repair and up to local hurricane building code specifications, especially if you plan on riding out the storm at your home.

One of the biggest issues that occurs when preparing structures is the availability of material and labor. If possible, it is always a good idea to have proper plywood, steel or aluminum panels to board up the windows and doors ahead of the season. Unfortunately not everyone is able to keep these materials on hold, but you can develop a plan, which includes the quantity of materials, the dimensions of windows and doors, a list of equipment needed and a list of potential people that can assist. Remember, the garage door is the most vulnerable part of the home, so it must be able to withstand the winds. And lastly, remember to secure all outdoor items. These can easily become projectiles that can cause serious harm and damage to anyone or anything in the area.
